New paper out in Marine Ecology Progress Series:

This was a really cool project done in collaboration with grad student Ben Burford and others at Hopkins Marine Station, Stanford University. We showed that shoaling causes lowered metabolic rate, and is accompanied by behaviour which suggests that the squid are less stressed in groups. This is presumably due to a lowered need for individual vigilance.

Similar patterns have been seen in shoaling fish, but this is the first time it has been documented in cephalopods. Great work from Ben!

You can find a link to the pdf on the Publications page. This was also the first work to be published citing my R package, respR.
